When you use Legal AI Assistant, your documents stay in NetDocuments. They are not copied to an external server, not sent to a third-party AI service, and not stored outside your firm's environment. The Assistant reads the document in place to generate a response.
If you're wondering if using this tool means your client's documents are going somewhere you can't control. The answer is no. Your NetDocuments environment is the boundary, and Legal AI Assistant operates inside it.
When you select documents and ask a question, Legal AI Assistant reads the content of that document to construct a response. That reading is temporary, existing only for the duration of your session. The Assistant does not retain the document's contents after your session ends.
The citations in each response link back to the source document in NetDocuments, which means the answer is always traceable, and the source always stays where you put it.
Legal AI Assistant does not bypass or override your existing NetDocuments access controls. It can only read documents you have access to. If a document is restricted, the Assistant cannot access it.
The permissions set in NetDocuments are the permissions Legal AI Assistant operates within.
