The ND Standard Taxonomy for AI Profiling

See the standard legal taxonomy behind AI Profiling, and use it to plan your own rollout.

AI Profiling reads your documents and adds specific, searchable metadata, so your team doesn't have to tag by hand. It does that using the ND Standard Taxonomy: a fixed set of legal topics, document types, and metadata fields. This resource shows what is in the taxonomy and how to use it to prepare for AI Profiling.

AI Profiling is set up with a qualified implementation partner. See the AI Profiling guide for how that works. It requires an ndMAX subscription that includes PatternBuilder.

What you'll find in this resource:

  • What the taxonomy contains
  • How to use it to prepare for AI Profiling
  • The full lists of legal topics, document types, and metadata fields

How to use the taxonomy

1

Compare it to the terms your firm uses

List the document types and practice areas your firm uses today. Mark where they match the standard taxonomy, where they overlap, and where they differ. Bring the differences to your partner.
2

Review the metadata for your main document categories

Pick the categories that matter most, such as contracts or dispute resolution documents. Check the fields AI Profiling would add. Decide which ones would help your team find documents, and which searches you want to be able to run.
3

Bring your findings to your partner

Share your comparison and your list of key searches with a qualified implementation partner, who uses it to scope and test AI Profiling for your documents. Find one with the NetDocuments Partner Locator.

What's in the ND Standard Taxonomy

Legal topics: 34

The area of law a document belongs to, such as Corporate, Real Estate, Tax, or Labor and Employment.

Document types: 92

What kind of document it is, grouped into agreements, corporate administrative documents, dispute resolution documents, other documents, and wills.

Dynamic metadata: 31

Fields that change with the document type. A contract gets fields such as parties, governing law, effective date, and notice for termination. A court filing gets fields such as court, case number, motion type, and hearing date.

Added alongside your own fields

AI Profiling metadata sits next to your firm's existing profile fields and doesn't replace them. On a document profile and in Advanced Search, you see your own fields and, separately, fields such as AI Document Classification, Legal Topic, and AI Document Summary.
